IGN has learned that Sony's upcoming enhanced PlayStation 4 Pro will feature an extra 1GB of RAM, a fairly minor upgrade compared to when a new system launches, but one lead architect Mark Cerny believes will make a significant difference to gamers. "We felt games needed a little more memory, about 10 percent more, so we added about 1GB of slow, conventional DRAM to the console."
What difference does this really make? Well, when moving from an application to a game, the former will be moved to the extra RAM, and that frees up nearly 1GB of the console's remaining 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. "Games have just a little more memory, 512MB to be exact, and most of that is used for the various buffers needed when rendering high-resolution or higher-quality graphics, and the game assets... stay the same, they just look a heck of a lot better on the new console." Awesome, right?
Another interesting reveal is the fact that the PS4 Pro's internal HDD is going to be removable so gamers can replace it with one of their choosing. "Yes, it is user replaceable," Cerny confirmed. The 4K console is set to be released worldwide from November 10th onward, so stay tuned for more details.
