Yesterday we got a video that gave us some tips and
advanced combat techniques for us to become better fighters in the new
God of War. Today we get some some tips from
God of War game director Cory Barlog that will surely help players master the game in no time.
As we all know, one of the biggest changes in the new God of War is the combat, which is less hack and slash and more tactical than in previous iterations. That's why it is important to be able to focus on positional and battlefield awareness, as well as using your axe for crowd control and other interesting thigs.
Battlefield Awareness:
Barlog tells us that the key is to keep mobile , use evades and move around without forgetting to block the enemies' attacks often.
"
Some people say the health bars are a little bit obtrusive. What they do provide is this sense of strategy that God of War has never really had. This ability to look at some of the harder level enemies and strategise whether or not you want to take care of that enemy first or actually relocate to take care of another enemy so it gives you a sense of tactics."
Use The Leviathan Axe for Crowd Control:
"
Throwing the Leviathan Axe at an enemy and freezing them allows you to focus on another enemy. So, as you start facing larger models of characters and you start seeing harder enemies mixed in with these. You can actually use the Leviathan Axe to pause somebody while you focus on another creature. "
He also mentions that players can choose to take down enemies from a distance by either throwing the Leviathan Axe at the enemies or by using Atreus' arrows, which leads to the next tip.
Stun Enemies With Atreus:
Atreus is a great accompaniment, according to Barlog, because he's able to open up characters and builds their Stun. So he blatantly says that players should never forget to use him in combat. Especially because that allows players to attack and defend at the same time, which will be extremely useful when the fights starte getting a bit more intense.
Spartan Rage:
"
The 'get out of jail free card at all times' is the Spartan Rage. You can go into that and it'll build up Stun really fast and every attack you do is actually feeding back in to your health. "
Barlog says that a lot of people forget that there is more than one button to access the Spartan Rage so he encourages players to not just focus on the R1 button but also try the R2 which is a larger area of attack.
"
As you get through the game you can upgrade and L1 attack and an L2 attack so you can have a full suite of special moves for Spartan Rage."
Evade:
Some heavy enemies will attack you and a little circle shows up, that meants that the attack is unblockable and that's where Evade comes into play.
"We have the two-stage evade, as well, so if you're upclose on an enemy you don't want to move farther away from them. You can actually just single tap on the Evade button and then that'll sidestep and still keep ou close enough to actually follow up with an attack. Or, if you really need to get out of there...say, with the Revenant's wide sweeping attack...you're going to want to double tap on that to evade either backwards or to the side."
With all that information at your disposal, all you need now is to get out there and start applying these whenever you're fighting those unforgiving enemies from
God of War.
His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive…And teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series—satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative—and fuses them anew.
God of War is available exclusively for the PlayStation 4 right now.
