Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most highly anticipated games in development right now. After years of rumors and leaks, Rockstar announced back in December 2023 that GTA 6 is coming in 2025 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar released an impressive trailer alongside the announcement that seemed to indicate that the game was fairly far along in development. Nothing substantial has been shared since then though.
Well, earlier this week, Kotaku reported that Grand Theft Auto 6 may miss its 2025 release window and could slip into 2026. The report was updated shortly after, stating "while early 2025 was at one point possible, it's no longer the target for Grand Theft Auto VI's launch."
There appear to be some conflicting reports, however. Following Kotaku's article, Bloomberg came out with its own take, explaining that even though GTA 6 is behind schedule, it's expected given how massive the gmae is supposed to be.
In reality, video games are always behind schedule and risk getting delayed at any time — especially when they’re as ambitious and under as much pressure as the next Grand Theft Auto. And there is so much time between now and the end of 2025 that even if the production was somehow going perfectly, it would be impossible for anyone to state definitively that the game will be ready in 21 months.
Bloomberg's article seemed to suggest that it could go either way -- it's just too soon to tell if the game will be delayed.
But now we've got a third article on the subject, and this one comes from Insider-Gaming who spoke with "a number of sources close to the game's development." Insider-Gaming wrote:
"Each one that spoke said that game was 'on schedule' and that any suggestion of a GTA 6 delay at this point in development is 'pure conjecture'," Insider-Gaming wrote. "With the game’s release being so far out, talk of a delay made little-to-no sense to those asked."
Although Rockstar announced a 2025 release window, the site claims that it was never going to be ready for an early 2025 release.
Grand Theft Auto 6 looks to be Rockstar's most ambitious title to date. The game takes us "to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet." The game will feature the series' first ever playable female protagonist in a story that follows a criminal duo that has been likened to Bonnie and Clyde.
