Sony has announced more than 5.9 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold through to consumers worldwide during the 2017 holiday season. Although its slightly lower than the year prior's 6.2 million units sold, it's still an impressive figure. As of December 31, 2017 - slightly over 4 years after the system's release - total global sales of PlayStation 4 eclipsed 73.6 million units. Comparitively, the PlayStation 3 sold around 83.8 million units in its lifetime.
On the software side, over 55.9 million PS4 games were sold during the holiday season across the world in retail stores and digitally via the PlayStation Store. This brings total game sales for the system to 645 million as of December 31. Looking ahead, Sony boasts an impressive slate of exclusives, including Shadow of the Colossus, Marvel's Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Days Gone, God of War, Detroit: Become Human and The Last of Us Part II. Suffice to say, there's plenty for PS4 owners to be exited for.
Sony also revealed that the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has reached 31.5 million.
