2016 has been an interesting year for VR, but it doesn't appear to have taken off in the way anyone expected. After all, it was earlier this year that research group SuperData issued a report claiming that PlayStation VR sales would reach 2.6 million units by the end of 2016. However, they've now updated those forecasts and it actually looks like the new piece of technology will sell around 750,000 instead.
Sales forecasts for the likes of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are also way down, and the figure about has actually been blamed on "supply inconsistencies" and a "lack of marketing" for the PlayStation VR.
"[Sony has] also pointed out that VR looks even better on a PS4 Pro than a standard or slim PS4, so the message to most gamers is: Get the Pro now, then the PSVR later," SuperData's Stephanie Llamas reveals. "As a result, we won't see them break 1M shipments until well into the new year." Despite that, she believes that Sony "can afford to take it slow" with PlayStation VR right now due to a relative lack of competition. However, it's now hard not to wonder about its longterm chances of success.
