Rumors of a PlayStation 5 Pro have been swirling for weeks and it seems that Sony is finally ready to reveal it. The company gamers to tune in to a special PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation on Tuesday, September 10th.
Hosted by Mark Cerny, Lead Architect of the PS5 console, the 9-minute Technical Presentation will focus "on PS5 and innovations in gaming technology."
That's all Sony said about the presentation, although many expect this will serve as the reveal of the PS5 Pro, the eagerly awaited mid-gen refresh of the PlayStation 5.
Prior to Sony's blog post announcing the presentation, some had actually spotted the unlisted YouTube video which, at the time, was seemingly titled "PS5 Pro." Sony soon updated the video, retitling it "PlayStation 5 - Technical Presentation - September 10."
Sony seemingly first teased the PS5 Pro earlier this month with another blog post dedicated to PlayStation's 30th anniversary. The post's header image featured silhouettes of various PlayStation consoles, accessories, and handhelds from the past. Hidden in the center of the image was a PlayStation console with a similar design to a leaked sketch for the PS5.
The console icon was unlike anything we've seen from PlayStation and featured multiple lines through the midsection. The lines are not present on current PlayStation 5 base models but are reportedly featured on the PS5 Pro — at least according to the sketch that was leaked online last month which was based on leaked packaging visuals.
Specifications for the currently unannounced PlayStation 5 Pro leaked online earlier this year. The console refresh is said to feature improvements to the CPU. Although the CPU is said to be identical to the standard PS5's CPU, it will feature a "High CPU Frequency Mode," which amounts to a 10% increase to 3.85GHz. The GPU will supposedly enable faster rendering and higher-quality ray tracing powered by 33.5 teraflops (the standard PS5 offers 10.28 teraflops). Other improvements are said to include an upscaling/antialiasing feature called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling), custom machine learning architecture, and an AI accelerator.
None of this has been confirmed or announced by Sony but is based on leaked documentation. If the PS5 Pro is announced tomorrow, then hopefully Sony will confirm the new tech powering the console. An announcement may also be accompanied by a release window, although an exact date or pricing details are unlikely.
