A Blizzard Entertainment franchise could be the next major video game series to receive a Netflix adaptation, according to a new report. This follows a growing trend of popular game-to-screen successes like The Minecraft Movie, Fallout, The Last of Us, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Blizzard and Netflix Collaboration Back on Track?
The rumor comes from gaming journalist Jez Corden, who spoke about the potential adaptation on the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast. During the podcast (spotted by ResetEra user Tommy Showbiz), At 1:00:44 mark in the video Corden said:
"I'm not going to say what game it is, but there's a Blizzard franchise that's getting some kind of Netflix treatment."
While Corden didn't provide many details other than that, he did hint that the official announcement could happen during BlizzCon 2026, scheduled for September.
It's important to note that this isn't the first time Blizzard and Netflix have been linked. Back in 2020, rumors swirled that Diablo and Overwatch animated series were in the works. However, a lawsuit filed by Blizzard against Netflix over alleged "executive poaching" derailed those early talks. If the latest reports are accurate, it seems the two entertainment giants have made amends and rekindled the fire for their discussions.
Which Blizzard Franchise Could Get the Netflix Treatment?
If we are to believe that Blizzard and Netflix are indeed working together again, the most likely candidates for adaptation could really be any of them between Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Overwatch. They have a lot to work with and here is a few examples for each franchise:
Warcraft has tried the big screen attempt once before, but with so much lore and backing fans know for a fact that it would hit big if they hit it right. Especially if they through the route of fan favorite character Arthas and becoming the Lich King. A story line which occurs through their hit RTS game Warcraft 3.
Starcraft has been lying a bit too low on the radar lately compared to Blizzards other titles, which leaves fans to guess and create many wild theories. There is a world of books and lore that they could draw from to create the series, much like the fantasy counter-part Warcraft. Although some fans would love to see the story go through the routes of either Kerrigan and becoming the Queen Of Blades. Or Jim Raynor and his team of mercenaries fighting Zerg and Protoss alike. The limits are endless.
Overwatch could also use a surge in attention. With Overwatch 2 facing player loss to competitors like Marvel Rivals, a high-quality animated or live-action Netflix series could help revitalize the community and introduce the franchise to new audiences.
Diablo already has a rich, dark fantasy setting that would translate beautifully into a mature, binge-worthy Netflix series, especially considering the success of shows like Castlevania and Arcane. There is something that fans enjoy of watching demons and monsters get torn to shreds on the screen.
Recent gaming adaptations have shown how effective a well-received TV series can be for reviving interest in a franchise. After the release of Prime Video’s Fallout series, Fallout game sales and player counts skyrocketed. Similarly, The Last of Us on HBO caused a massive 200%+ increase in game sales.
Given the success of these adaptations, a Blizzard title on Netflix could be another major win for both industries.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Since BlizzCon 2026 is still over a year away, fans should manage expectations for when concrete information will drop. However, the idea of a Blizzard-Netflix collaboration finally coming to fruition is an exciting prospect, whether it’s focused on The Lich King, The Queen Of Blades, Sanctuary’s demons or Overwatch’s heroes.
Until then, keep an eye out for more leaks and official confirmations. Because it looks like Blizzard could be the next major studio to join the gaming-to-TV revolution.
