Get ready for more vehicular carnage. Peacock announced at The Game Awards this week that Twisted Metal has been renewed for a second season.
"Because of our incredible fans, Twisted Metal is coming back for Season 2 on Peacock," series star and executive producer Anthony Mackie revealed. "So everybody get your motor revving because you're going on another ride with John Doe!"
Based on the beloved car-battling video game franchise for PlayStation, Peacock's adaptation featured an original, humorous and action-packed storyline that follows Anthony Mackie's John Doe -- an amnesiac and motor-mouthed delivery driver -- on a mission to deliver a mysterious package halfway across the post-apocalyptic United States.
The first season introduced us to the bizarre world of Twisted Metal where, years after civilization's collapse in the early 2000s, society is fragmented and connected only by delivery drivers (known in this world as "milkmen"). While the first season featured plenty of references to the video game franchise, including thrilling vehicular car combat and iconic characters, one thing noticeably absent was Calypso’s vehicular tournament. But the ending of Season 1 strongly alluded that the vehicular combat tournament is coming, presumably in the second season.
“I have to give a Sweet Tooth-sized thank you to our incredible fans — I read every comment and was so blown away by everyone's love, support, and rabid enthusiasm for a paper bag,” showrunner, writer, and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith said in a statement. "We are beyond thankful we get to continue the story of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth as they face off against familiar faces and new grim foes in the long-awaited Twisted Metal tournament. The mixtape is made, and I’m thrilled to get back on the road with our stellar cast and crew."
In addition to Mackie's announcement, Peacock shared a more official announcement trailer featuring Sweet Tooth. One of the video game franchise's most iconic characters, Sweet Tooth was voiced by Will Arnett and portrayed by Samoa Joe in the series. As teased in the post-credits scene for the Season 1 finale, Sweet Tooth will return for the second season.
With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended, the second season is moving full steam ahead. We still don't have a premiere date for the second season, but hopefully, it won't be too far from now. The complete first season of Twisted Metal is now streaming on Peacock.
