High On Life, a comedy-shooter from Squanch Games, the studio founded by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, is the biggest launch for Xbox Game Pass in 2022, the biggest launch for a third-party Game Pass title overall, and the biggest release of a single-player-only title in the service's history. Based on the number of hours played in the first five days after release, those statistics are measured in terms of engagement.
Mike Fridley, Studio Director and COO of Squanch Games, stated, "This was our first time launching a game with Game pass, and we've been blown away by the response from the players who have made us the most popular game on Game Pass right now. When Squanch Games was first created, it was to make the games we wanted to play - and Game Pass is helping us reach the players that want to play those games too."
The General Manager of Content Planning for Xbox, Matt Percy, also added, "High on Life is an incredibly unique title that we've been excited about for a long time... It's fantastic to see so many Game Pass members jump into it at launch to experience Squanch's story for themselves ahead of the holidays."
High on Life is a simple story of an extraterrestrial cartel learning that people may be used as narcotics, which causes an ordinary teenager to become involved in a cosmic struggle. Of course, the only option is to join the bounty hunter community and eliminate the cartel as a whole. High on Life has been a major hit with players all around the world due to its blend of traditional shooting, light RPG features, and absurd humor.
In a current podcast conversation Co-creator Justin Roiland and Larry Hryb, they discussed how much is to be found along the route with Larry Hryb and urged players to venture "off the golden path" in order to unearth a lot of deeply buried information and surprises. The development team went above and above to highlight additional voices, animations, and features that reflect player choices, drawing inspiration from Roiland's own gaming interests, which include Fallout 3.
