With
the dangers of "swatting", the last thing you probably want is for an aggressive Call of Duty troll to get ahold of your real name along with your IP Address. However, that's a real danger currently as Microsoft's Xbox Live has encountered a bug that displays player's real names besides their gamertag. What's worst is the fact that this bug can become active regardless of whether you're currently online or not.
Some Xbox users are worried that the mistake might be Microsoft tipping their hand early on some new agenda to turn the Xbox Live scene into a new social media platform.
When Kotaku reached out to Microsoft for comment, a Microsoft spokesperson simply responded, "We’re actively working to address an issue some users may be experiencing with their profile."
On your gamertag profile, there is an option to display your real name or gamertag and virtually everyone has this feature set to display their gamertag or to display just their first name. This issue becomes especially pressing for big streamers and celebrities who might wish to remain anonymous on a backup account or avoid stalkers.
