Capcom Faces Backlash As Fans Spot Censorship In ONIMUSHA 2: SAMURAI'S DESTINY Remaster

Capcom is facing the expected ire of the internet as fans spot some minor tweaks to a main character model to be less fanservice-like.

Capcom released Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny all the way back in 2002, and to say gaming was more of a niche hobby would be an understatement. If you went around to games around that time, many can be rather suggestive, including with games by Capcom. In this specific game, though, main character Oyu was pretty scantily clad, being largely the reason that partial nudity was a ding against it, with no visible shirt under her fur coat. In the remaster, though, that same outfit has been altered to cover her up.

Fans have gone around voicing their displeasure with the change, citing censorship, as Capcom had no real need to change the outfit, considering Onimusha 2 already boasts an M rating, meaning suggestive outfits and such should be no problem for the game and its reach, anyway. This is what confuses players; they have no need to change the outfit beyond just general modern sensabilities, which plenty of older fans are tired of. Meanwhile, it feels like Capcom can be rather selective in terms of what IPs are more likely to get censored than others.

While Oyu got her cleavage wraped up, games like Street Fighter and Dragon's Dogma 2 enjoy a healthy dose of fanservice, with scantily clad outfits all over the place, like Cammy's leotard or a whole host of armors that female characters can don. Meanwhile, games like Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered saw content altered, like Larry Chiang turning into a white guy, a stark departure from his Asian original, or Cliff Hudson calling you a "filthy animal" rather than "filthy communist."

It's worth pointing out that beyond that Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny specific outfit, the game is largely untouched aside from touching up the graphics, which means if you have a nostalgic bone in your body for the Onimusha series, this game might scratch it as the series hasn't seen any action, a singular VR game last year, since 2019's Warlords remaster. It also keeps to much of the original game's stuff for better or worse.

We suspect more remasters are in Capcom's future and that this weird standard of how they apply alterations like this won't be going away any time soon. Anyway, here's the official description of the remaster.

"Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny returns with HD graphics and improved controls on the original game's intense swordplay and dramatic revenge story. Play as Jubei Yagyu and make your way through feudal Japan with your allies. This game has additional language support adapted from the original script."
