Late last year it was discovered via a slew of leaks that there were eight single-player DLC expansions planned for Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar Games ultimately canceled these plans, opting instead to focus on the highly successful Grand Theft Auto Online.
One of the canceled DLCs was reportedly called "Agent Trevor." At the time, we didn't know what this sort of expansion would entail but now GTA 5 voice actor Steve Ogg has offered a few details of what could have been.
During a Q&A stream about the game, Ogg, who played Trevor Philips, confirmed that they actually did work on the DLC, but that Rockstar never followed up on it.
“We also had that really cool s**t of — and I forget if it was DLC, I have no idea — but where Trevor was gonna be undercover, he works for the FEDs,” Ogg revealed. “And we did shoot some of that stuff with ‘James Bond Trevor’ – he’s still kind of a [frick] up, but he’s doing his best to pretend to be like [a secret agent]. We shot some stuff and then it just disappeared and [Rockstar] never did it, they never followed up on it.”
Ogg's statement aligns with the previous leaks and offers the first actual insight of what could have been a pretty off-the-rails episodic expansion.
Michael actor Ned Luke, who was also part of the stream, suggested that the DLC was canceled due to the success of GTA Online.
Since launching in October 2013, GTA Online has blown up in popularity and is a consistent moneymaker for Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two. The free-to-play online multiplayer mode offers players an open-world sandbox where they can freely roam San Andreas, completing missions on their way to becoming a powerful criminal. Even 10-plus years after its launch, GTA Online continues to remain popular with new content being shipped regularly.
Despite the success of GTA Online though, its future remains uncertain as Rockstar Games has already announced Grand Theft Auto 6. The highly anticipated blockbuster is set to release in 2025, but it's unclear how its arrival will impact GTA Online.
GTA 6 will almost certainly introduce the next iteration of the popular multiplayer mode, but will it be an entirely new sandbox experience? Will all of the progress, cosmetics, and such that players have unlocked or purchased carry over? Will it simply be the same game, but with a new location — in this case, the fictional state of Leonida (based on Florida) — introduced as a possible new area to explore?
We simply don't know.
