XLGames has announced the abrupt closure of its free-to-play post-apocalyptic extraction shooter The Cube, Save Us, only three weeks after the game launched on Steam. The developer confirmed that the servers will officially shut down on May 8, 2026, giving players roughly one month to experience the title before it disappears.

In an official statement, XLGames expressed gratitude to the community while acknowledging the decision:

“We once again thank our Raiders who have loved The Cube, Save Us, and we will never forget the memories and experiences we have shared together.”

The studio noted that the game “started with a lot of support and affection” from players, but ultimately failed to sustain momentum.

The Cube, Save Us launched on March 18, 2026, and reached a peak concurrent player count of 5,177 on Steam. However, that number dropped sharply within days, falling into the low hundreds shortly after release. For a free-to-play extraction shooter that relies on a healthy population for matchmaking and long-term engagement, the decline proved fatal.

The game currently sits at “Mostly Negative” reviews on Steam, with many players criticizing it as a “cash grab” despite some logging significant playtime. One reviewer with over 160 hours called the title “trash,” highlighting deep dissatisfaction with the monetization and overall experience.

In response to the shutdown, XLGames has stated that full refunds will be issued to any player who spent money on in-game purchases.

The shutdown highlights the extreme difficulty of breaking through in the crowded extraction shooter genre. While games like Arc Raiders have maintained steady popularity nearly five months after launch, others have struggled to find an audience. Bungie’s Marathon, despite strong reviews and frequent updates, has yet to achieve mainstream breakout success.

The Cube, Save Us joins a growing list of extraction shooters that failed to retain players long enough to build a sustainable community. Its rapid closure underscores how quickly the genre can punish titles that fail to deliver a compelling loop or strong first impression.

It is worth noting that The Cube, Save Us is unrelated to the upcoming MMORPG The Cube being developed by Mundfish (the studio behind Atomic Heart). That project remains in development and has not been affected by this announcement.

For players who were curious about The Cube, Save Us, there is still time to try it before the May 8 shutdown. However, with full refunds available for any purchases, the studio appears to be doing what it can to soften the blow for its small remaining player base.

The quick end to this title serves as another reminder of how challenging it is for new live-service games to survive in today’s competitive landscape, especially in a genre that demands consistent player engagement and strong word-of-mouth.
