MARVEL'S AVENGERS: The Game's Combat System Has Been Built Around Each Avenger Individually

According to the Director and Combat Lead Designer for Marvel's Avengers, the combat system for each of the playable Avengers has been built around them individually.

When Marvel's Avengers was finally revealed to the world during this year's E3, some people weren't convinced by what they saw — mainly because the trailer chose to center around the game's plot rather than its gameplay, although there are some bits of gameplay there; they're just not the focus.

Since the trailer was first released, the developers at Crystal Dynamics have been clearing up some doubts that people may have had regarding the game's story and gameplay, as well as revealing some other interesting details about Marvel's Avengers.

In a recent interview with Venture Beat, Vincent Napoli and Shaun Escayg — Lead Combat Designer and Director for Marvel's Avengers — revealed that the game's combat system has been built around every single one of the Avengers instead of giving all of them different power levels.

According to Napoli, "the goals were really character-driven, first and foremost. We want you to be these characters. They’re so iconic. They almost demand their own games themselves. We looked at each character and thought, “We’re going to build the mechanics that are true to the characters that we want to see, and then start developing the larger combat system around them.

He also mentions that, for instance, the Hulk can use the environment as weapons, even his enemies; making him a "weaponizer" in his own right, which adds a lot of depth to the game's combat system.

"Hulk is a class by himself. He’s the class of Hulk, and we built around that. He’s all about weaponizing the world. He can weaponize enemies, weaponize the environment. There’s a lot of depth in the abilities that you can unlock as you start to weaponize one enemy, two enemies, what you can do with them, the types of environments you grab."

When asked if environments will be fully destructible in Marvel's Avengers, Director Shaun Escayg mentions that they're actually doubling down on that premise, especially when it comes to the Hulk, to what Napoli adds that Hulk will be able to grab different objects depending on the environment.

"You can see here that based on the different types of environments, he can grab different objects. You don’t see it here, but he has a full navigation set with that object. He can run around with it. He has different attacks, an entire suite of attacks and abilities with that object. He has the same thing with a single enemy or with two enemies. No other character plays anything like that. That’s very unique to him."

With every bit of detail that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics reveal about Marvel's Avengers, fans get more excited to see some gameplay for the game. Hopefully, the developers decide to share some official gameplay soon.



Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Marvel's The Avengers will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on the 15th of May in 2020.
