Disintegration's multiplayer will be shutting down, V1 Interactive and Private Division announced. Disintegration released on June 15 but struggled to build an audience over its three-month lifespan thus far, resulting in the studio deciding to pull the plug on the game's multiplayer modes.

The multiplayer removal will actually be a multiphase process, which already started this week with the removal of the in-game store. On November 17, multiplayer will be fully removed from the game. The single player campaign will remain available for those who wish to continue playing the game.

The companies offered a joint statement on the game's blog, praising the small studio for its work on innovating the first-person shooter genre and thanking the fans who helped support the game.

From both the development team at V1 Interactive and publishing group at Private Division, we stand by the creative risks taken to launch such a unique, genre-bending game created by this small but talented and passionate team. While our player base showed interest in the single player campaign, the game unfortunately struggled to build a significant audience necessary for a compelling multiplayer experience. After weighing options, we have collectively made the decision to sunset the multiplayer support.

We believe the video game industry needs constant innovation, and we will continue to take risks, follow creative visions, and support new ideas.

To everyone who has played Disintegration: we thank you.

Disintegration has a mixed score on Metacritic with many acknowleding the game's attempt to blend first-person shooter and real-time strategy elements together; however, most agree that it doesn't quite deliver on the promise of the concept. With multiplayer going away, the draw for Disintegration will now be its single-player sci-fi story which also seems lackluster.

Most seem agree Disintegration was a good first-step in what could have been a promising franchise. But with the game unable to find an audience, it's unlikely we'll get a sequel.

For now, Disintegration is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
