Earlier in March Capcom had announced that Monster Hunter: World had sold an impressive 7.5 million units sold worlwide since its release on the 26th of January, which includes both, physical and digital sales.
Capcom's fiscal year, though, ended on the 31st of March, in which Monster Hunter: World began setting a lot of records for the company by becoming the best-selling title in the history of Capcom, which is no small feat. Accdording to a recent announcement by Capcom, Nintendo Switch titles like Monster Hunter XX(yet to be localised outside of Japan) and Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers were also enjoying hit status by the company's standards.
Due to the strong performance from the company's Digital Content business, Capcom has seen an achievement of five consecutive years of operating income growth as all profitability figures from operating income are setting record highs. As a result, Capcom wants to strengthen digital download sales and increase its pipeline of major title releases. This is particularly reassuring given that this year the company is celebrating the anniversaries of two of their biggest franchises - Mega Man and Street Fighter - which will likely help with those sales.
Monster Hunter: World was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, the game has not been released for the Nintendo Switch yet. Maybe Capcom will now consider localising Monster Hunter XX after the positive reaction the game got in Japan, especially since Nintendo fans have yet to play a Monster Hunter game on the very successful Nintendo Switch, so it is almost a no-brainer to have a successful game on a successful console.
In the announcement, Capcom also addresses the poor sales of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which they deemed as "soft". This is far from a surprise given the massive backlash the game got since launch due to the lack of content and questionable character design, and the lack of X-Men characters, among many other issues. It also didn't help that the superior fighting game - Dragon Ball FighterZ - looks and plays better, to the point Marvel vs. Capcom was completely removed from this year's EVO and replaced with Arc System Works' Dragon Ball fighting game.
Hopefully these sales numbers help Capcom figure out where to focus their attention on, strictly talking about their most successful IPs, and where to start making changes like with Marvel vs. Capcom. They seem to know what they want, but they need to stop making promises and start delivering soon or those numbers will start dropping fast.
