There hasn't been a new installment in Medal of Honor game series since Medal of Honor: Warfighter — which released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012. Thankfully, though, one has now been announced by Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment.

However, it's not a traditional first-person shooter for consoles but rather a virtual-reality game. Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is said to be an "epic AAA experience like no other," which will bring historic battlefields of World War II to the Oculus Rift VR platform.

You'll play as an Allied agent of the Office of Strategic Services who is tasked with infiltrating, outgunning, and outsmarting the Nazi war machine. Your journey across Europe will see you join forces with the French Resistance and work to sabotage the Nazi effort from behind enemy lines.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will consist of a both multiplayer modes as well as a fully-fledged campaign. It's set to release next year exclusively for the aforementioned VR system. Peter Hirschmann, the writer of the original Medal of Honor game has returned to the franchise as the director of the forthcoming VR experience.

Below you can read what Hirschmann had to say about Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond and check out the trailer that has been released by Oculus:

From the beginning, Medal of Honor has taught gamers about the tremendous sacrifice and heroic efforts made by earlier generations to safeguard our freedom.

Thanks to VR, we can actually put a player in the boots of a WWII soldier with Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond—the immersion that the Rift Platform provides lets us tell that story in a really meaningful way, sharing the full impact of the sacrifices and camaraderie of our shared history. Interviewing veterans of WWII was an immense privilege and allowed us to ensure its respect and faithfulness to those who served. They’re helping us drive home the full emotional and historical weight of this subject matter with players in a way that really resonates.
