Prior to 2016, EA's
Battlefield was Activision's main competitor in the modern military shooter genre. Games like
Battlefield 3 and 4 were impressive demonstrations of the power of the Frostbite Engine and a favorite for fans of quality, multiplayer shooters.
However, like the World War II setting before it, gamers became fatigued with modern and futuristic time periods for First Person Shooters. As a response to that shift in the gaming public's desires, Developer Dice made
Battlefield World War I which was set in the Great War. The game was a blockbuster success and Activision responded with last year's
Call Of Duty: WW II.
According to
GamesBeat, Dice is hard at work on the followup to
Battlefield I. The game will take place during World War II and is currently called
Battlefield V. If true, this will be the first entry in the franchise set in that time period since 2009's
Battlefield 1943. Apparently, EA will reveal the game soon and is prepared to release it before the end of this calendar year.
