Intrepid Studios founder Steven Sharif has issued a strong denial in response to fresh allegations that he personally misused millions in company funds, including spending on private chefs, antiques, cigars, trading card games, and other personal expenses.
The claims surfaced in a detailed video from YouTuber NefasQS on Friday, April 11, 2026. NefasQS stated they had obtained and analyzed Intrepid Studios’ general ledger from 2015 to 2026, pointing to over $12 million in transactions that allegedly lack proper business justification. Specific examples cited include thousands spent at historical auctions, payments to Gore Oil Company (linked to the purchase of Sharif and his husband’s mansion), Fortnite purchases labeled as “R&D,” and expenses tied to a private chef who reportedly cooked only for Sharif and his husband at home rather than for employees.
NefasQS also referenced interviews with former employees who claimed the private chef was promised to the team but never appeared at the office, citing supposed permit issues with the commercial kitchen.
On April 12, Sharif released the following statement:
“NefasQS has been fed false and defamatory information by individuals with an axe to grind, in an effort to litigate this dispute in the public domain alongside our lawsuit already pending in federal court. Rather than verify those claims, he has chosen to repeat them, acting as a mouthpiece to advance a narrative that drives clicks and views, with disregard for basic journalistic standards. The selective presentation of information is intentional and serves to create a false narrative.
As to the broader claims:There was no misappropriation of Kickstarter funds whatsoever.
The project has been funded over many years through a combination of sources, including substantial personal capital.
Assertions regarding ‘lavish lifestyle’ or personal misuse of company funds are categorically false.”
Sharif further accused the parties behind the claims of orchestrating an “unlawful foreclosure” to seize control of Intrepid’s assets, resulting in the sudden termination of hundreds of developers without notice, pay, or benefits. He stated that additional evidence will be filed in federal court tomorrow to support Intrepid’s position.
The controversy is part of a larger dispute that began when the entire development team working on Ashes of Creation was laid off two months ago, effectively halting active development on the long-awaited MMO. Investor Jason Caramanis originally leveled accusations against Sharif, claiming millions intended for the studio were diverted for personal use. The situation has since escalated into a federal lawsuit.
NefasQS maintains that the ledger data was cross-verified with multiple sources and former employee interviews. In a pinned comment on the video, the creator noted that someone had already filed a privacy complaint against the upload and reported their Reddit account, but they intend to dispute both actions.
Ashes of Creation remains in a state of limbo, although probably dead. The Kickstarter-funded MMO, which raised significant attention for its ambitious dynamic world and node system, has seen its development come to a sudden stop amid the legal and financial turmoil. Fans are left uncertain about the project’s future, with some expressing frustration that the drama has overshadowed the game itself.
As the federal case proceeds, both sides are expected to present further documentation and evidence. Sharif’s upcoming court filing is anticipated to directly address the financial allegations and the circumstances surrounding the mass layoffs.
For now, the situation remains highly contentious, with strong claims on both sides and limited independent verification possible until more court documents become public. Stay tuned as we get more updates.
