Sega Confirms That The SEGA AGES Lineup Is Coming To An End, But They May Still Have Some Surprises Left

We may have some disappointing and some uplifting news in regards to the SEGA Ages lineup of games, as Sega confirms that it's coming to an end; they still have some surprises in store for players, though.

During Sega's FES in 2018, the Japanese developer announced that the SEGA Ages lineup of classic video games was making its way into the Nintendo Switch, and the series has been ongoing ever since. Recent information has rvealed, however, that the series is soon coming to an end, but there are good news.

Ever since it was launched on the Nintendo Switch, Sega has been consistently releasing some of their most critically acclaimed, classic video games from the 8-bit and 16-bit era — including all-time classic like the original SOnic the Hedgehog, Virtua Racing, Puyo Puyo, and Space Harrier; to name only but a few, of course.

In a recent interview with Japanese outlet Game Watch, as translated by the people over at Nintendo Everything, Sega Creative Producer Yosuke Okunari confirmed that the SEGA Ages lineup of games is coming to an end with the release of Herzog Zwei.

"Although the SEGA Ages project has come to an end with the release of Herzog Zwei, there are many games in the collection you can still buy and play. So please check them out if you don’t own them yet. However, this doesn't mean that this is the end of SEGA's plans to re-release past titles," Okunari revealed, while also adding that he's already working on a new project.

"I, along with SEGA's own [Rieko] Kodama and [Kagasei] Shimomura, are currently hard at work on our next project. At this point in time, unfortunately, I can't tell you whether or not M2 will be involved. If this makes you think, 'Oh, then they’re definitely doing something with M2,'I hope we can live up to your expectations," Okunari continued.

Here's where things get interesting, as Okunari has also revealed that they have still plans to keep releasing some of their critically acclaimed past titles on the Nintendo Switch — these will not be part of the SEGA Ages lineup, though.

"Considering SEGA Ages has ended, some may be wondering if we have plans to continue re-releasing past titles on Nintendo Switch – I want that to happen. I hope to bring something over that will really satisfy Switch players. So until then, we hope you’ll look forward to it," Okunari concludes.

The SEGA Ages lineup of games weren't mere ports of Sega's classic titles, since quite a bunch of them got new features that enhanced the original experience. While SEGA Ages is coming to an end, Sega will likely release a new collection of classic titles for players to enjoy; maybe, even, on other platforms, too.
