Sega May Be Considering Bringing Dreamcast Games To The Nintendo Switch

A very interesting report is suggesting that Sega may be considering bringing some Dreamcast games to the Nintendo Switch in a similar vein to the Sega Ages titles.

The Sega Dreamcast was one of the best consoles of its time, but it ended up making Sega abandon the hardware market due to poor sales. Some would consider the Dreamcast a console ahead of its time and they wouldn't be wrong, the console was the first of the 6th generation consoles, preceding Nintendo's GameCube and Sony's PlayStation 2.

In Japan, the console released in November of 1998, releasing almost a whole year later worldwide. This was a year prior to the PlayStation 2, successor to the incredibly popular PlayStation; which made interest for Sega's new console decline. It also didn't help that Nintendo had announced the GameCube, which came out two years after the Dreamcast, and Microsoft was also introducing their first console ever: the Xbox.

People who got around to owning a Sega Dreamcast can assure you that the console was nothing short of a technical marvel, and its library of games are still held in high regard. Sadly, if it isn't by illegally emulating the games, Sega Dreamcast titles are very difficult to come by these days, as well as quite expensive for that very same reason: they are very rare.

Now we may be getting some positive news since Famitsu has posted an interview with Japanese developer M2's president, Naoki Horii, and creative producer for Sega Yosuke Okunari. This interview took place at this year's Tokyo Game show, where Horii and Okunari talked about the posibility about Sega Ages expanding to Dreamcast games on the Nintendo Switch.

When asked about the Sega Dreamcast being transferred over, Horii said that "at the time, it seemed likely that we’d be able to emulate Dreamcast software on the Nintendo Switch. Depending on whether you’re emulating software or remaking the source code entirely, porting something is completely different. I think SEGA chose some of the titles based on that – no doubt emulation increased the number of titles they were able to choose from".

Yosuke Okunari then added that they are still considering doing something like this, but there isn't anything official yet as they have yet to come to a conclusion on adding more games, and which games these will be.

"I think that this time the results of the survey influenced that as well. I haven’t really come to a conclusion yet, but I wonder if it’d be better to release more titles from the list in a manner similar to the Virtual Console (in their original state) or to hand-pick a select few with added features (like the Grantnoff boss in the 3DS version of Thunder Blade)".

Sega Ages is a compilation of games that Sega has been releasing on various consoles. Recently, Sega released the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Lightening Force: Quest for Darkstar, and the posibility that Dreamcast titles like Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure,  or the brilliant Jet Set Radio could end up making it to the Nintendo Switch is almost a dream come true for many fans of Sega's last console. We'll keep our fingers crossed so that this dream(cast) becomes a reality.
