Carbine Studios' sci-fi massively multiplayer online role-playing game
WildStar will shut down on November 28, the studio announced today. News of Carbine's closure came last month, so this announcement shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.
Still, it's incredibly sad news as
WildStar was an ambitious game that attempted to recapture the old-school feel of MMORPGs when it first released in 2014. Unfortunately, it just failed to attract an audience large enough to support it.
In a message posted by Carbine, the studio promised "to do everything we can to honor the
WildStar community, and show thanks for your support." This includes one final update released today that contains a few changes
"aimed at ensuring you can enjoy everything WildStar has to offer." The drop rate of Omnibits, an in-game currency, have been increased; seasonal store items and rotating costumes/mounts are available via the in-game store; and everyone will receive Signature status, among other things.
Additionally, Carbine has a generous schedule of events that will carry us through to the end of November, including one final in-game event planned for November 28.
The studio offered a heartfelt message to fans who have stuck with them since the beginning:
We are truly grateful for the vibrant community that grew around WildStar, and for all of your support throughout the life of this game. Our hope is that in these last couple months we can all celebrate the great adventures you’ve had on Planet Nexus—and have some fun along the way.
Again, a most heartfelt thank you goes out from all of us to you for sharing this wild, intergalactic ride with us, and to helping make WildStar an experience that truly could not have been possible without you. Thank you.
WildStar launched in 2014 as a subscription-based MMO and went free-to-play the following year. Carbine Studios suffered layoffs in 2016 and
was officially closed on September 6.
