Sony's attempt at a classic console a lá Nintendo's
NES and
SNES Classic consoles has not been as successful as the company would've hoped for. Fans were excited when the
PlayStation Classic was first announced but that excitement started to fade away the more details about the console were revealed.
Having released on the 3rd of December of last year, Sony's
PlayStation Classic was met with a lukewarm reception by fans of the original PSX console, who complained about the lack of games — as well as its uninspired selection; proving that nostalgia alone wasn't keeping that ship afloat.
A short three weeks after the
PlayStation Classic was released,
several retailers were listing the console at a 40% of its original retail price (each unit originally listed at $100 USD), with some retailers selling the console at $60 USD and even $55 USD.
A bit over two months after the console's release, multiple retailers are listing the
PlayStation Classic at a price point of $40 USD; officially making Sony's nostalgia-catering console a flop.
Sony's commitment to the
PlayStation Classic seemed to have been fuelled by the success of Nintendo's classic consoles, but the execution proved that they didn't really know what was it that made both the
NES Classic and
SNES Classic a success, since a console is only as good as the games available for it; and Sony's
PlayStation Classic failed to deliver in that department.
