Sony has made tremendous improvements to PlayStation Network since its inception over a decade ago, but one long-requested feature has yet to be implemented: the ability for gamers to change their PlayStation ID name. Back in December, Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden hinted that Sony may finally address the request, and now a survey sent out to PlayStation gamers suggests he was serious in his remarks.
PushSquare obtained a copy of the survey which reads: "PlayStation have been exploring the possibility of adding a feature to PSN that lets users change their ID. Before any of this though, they want to understand if gamers are interested in this feature or not."
The survey also seems to propose who PSN name changes would work. You’d be able to change your name multiple times for free, but you’d only be able to do it once every six months. Additionally, if you want to change your PSN name back to something older, you’d have to contact customer support.
Although the survey acknowledges “we can’t be sure whether this feature will be added or not,” it’s good to see Sony is actively investigating it. At PSX in December, Layden admitted the feature is “more complex than you think.” Hopefully Sony figures it out so we can stop pestering them.
