This month marked the first time that Niantic has ever tried something like what they did for the February Community Day Event. Instead of announcing which Pokémon would be featured roughly ahead of time before the event, this time the choice of featured guest was put into the hands of the player.
Trainers were given the opportunity to head out and spin Pokéstops in order to gain Field Research Tasks which upon completed provides the opportunity to vote. With four options of Rhyhorn, Machop, Vulpix, and Dratini. While some people might have expected the pseudo-Legendary creature Dragonite to take the win, it was actually the Rhyhorn family that won the day.
It is worth noting that of the four initial available choices, they were all Pokémon from the Kanto Region. This is the first time Niantic has done something like this, but it might be interesting if they chose the Johto Region for their next event. Niantic has said that they are evaluating the ongoing experiment and taking any insights into account for the next Community, so its possible that this voting has set a precedent going forward.
February's
Pokémon Go Community Day Event features Rhyhorn, Rhydon, and Rhyperior and will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020. Trainers will enjoy a featured bonus of 3x Catch Stardust, so don't forget to use those Star Pieces wisely during the event time. Speaking of which, the event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time in the Northern Hemisphere and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Southern Hemisphere.
For any shiny hunters out there, the Shiny Rhyhorn is also available so be on the look out! It's also important to remember to evolve your Rhydon into Rhyperior during the event if you wish to learn the exclusive move of the day, which is Rock Wrecker.
