Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released on the 7th of December — exclusively for the Nintendo Switch — becoming a massive hit that pretty much everyone saw coming; it's
Super Smash Bros., after all.
A few days after the game's release in Japan, Famitsu revealed in their preliminar sales report that
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had sold an impressive 1.3 million copies within its first week since it launched; breaking yet another record for Nintendo's crossover fighting series.
Prior to the game's release, Nintendo had also revealed that
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the best pre-selling title in the series, as well as the best pre-selling game on the Nintendo Swich, not to mention the
fastest-selling title in the history of the Super Smash Bros. series, according to UK charts.
As if that wasn't enough,
Amazon also announced that the game was their best-selling title of 2018, and now
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate breaks a new record by officially outselling
Super Smash Bros. 3DS in Japan.
Super Smash Bros. 3DS is the fourth title in the crossover fighting series and released in September of 2014. Ever since, the game has managed to sell 2.558.302 copies, while the recently released
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — in a little over a month after its release — has already sold a smashing 2.628.087 units.
Also, it is worth mentioning that the Nintendo 3DS dominated the portable gaming market, and was deemed a popular console in Japan. The fact that the
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch has managed to outsell the Nintendo 3DS version is no small feat and — again — the game has only been out for a month.
It will definitely be interesting to see how well
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold once Nintendo shares their official sales numbers at the end of their fiscal year, and even more interesting to see how well the game sells by the end of the Nintendo Switch's cycle.
Legendary game worlds and fighters collide in the ultimate showdown—a new entry in the Super Smash Bros. series for the Nintendo Switch system! New fighters, like Inkling from the Splatoon series and Ridley from the Metroid series, make their Super Smash Bros. series debut alongside every Super Smash Bros. fighter in the series…EVER!
