During a recent interview with
IGN Japan, PlatinumGames Producer revealed that the company would like to start self-publishing the
Bayonetta series of games on other platforms, although they are aware that this may not be possible. The reason? The rights for
Bayonetta are owned by Sega and Nintendo; each company owning half of the intellectual property.
The first entry in the
Bayonetta series — which has a sequel that released exclusively for Nintendo consoles and a third entry currently in development — was first released on the Xbox 360 and later ported to the PlayStation 3, although the port for Sony's console was quite terrible in comparison.
When Sega didn't want to publish
Bayonetta 2, in fact, Nintendo was the company that stepped in and completely funded the project, which is the reason why
Bayonetta 2 cannot really be released on other platforms right now. Adding to this,
Bayonetta 3 is also being developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, so chances of PlatinumGames porting
Bayonetta 2 and its upcoming sequel are quite slim at the moment.
With all that said, PlatinumGames announced — just this week, in fact — that they had launched a
Kickstarter campaign to develop The Wonderful 101: Remastered(a game that was also exclusive to a Nintendo console) for a number of platforms, so everything is possible; it just isn't very likely that it will happen any time soon, but hope is the one thing one loses.
