The majority of players recognize Epic Games as the creators of the Gears of War and Unreal Tournament series, as well as the biggest gaming phenomenon in years, Fortnite. Today, Epic Games announced the creation of a new Steam-like PC store, as the company will only take 12 percent of all game sale revenues within its store, with the remaining 88 percent going to developers and publishers.
That's a groundbreaking initiative, as the traditional industry standard for digital revenue split usually gives 30 percent to the store owner like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Apple, Android, and Valve. Epic hopes that the Epic Games store will attract companies with this hefty revenue splint. Right now, millions of people use the Epic Games Launcher (that has a store in it as well) to play Fortnite on PC.
“As a developer ourselves, we have always wanted a platform with great economics that connects us directly with our players,” Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said in a press release. “Thanks to the success of Fortnite, we now have this and are ready to share it with other developers.” The shop will launch "soon," as Epic doesn’t plan to add social components like game streaming or forums.
