Later this year, comic book fans will have the opportunity to step into the suit of the Dark Knight and become the Caped Crusader himself in Batman: Arkham Shadow. The first new Batman: Arkham game in eight years was first teased earlier this year and revealed to be a new VR game releasing exclusively for the Meta Quest 3.
The announcement was met with mixed reactions from gamers. While many were excited about a new Batman: Arkham game, not everyone enjoys first-person VR gameplay. It didn't help that we hadn't really seen any gameplay; trailers released thus far have mainly been teasers and story-focused.
But this week, developer Camouflaj and publisher Oculus Studios finally debuted the official gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Shadow. In the two-minute trailer below, we get our first look at the first-person gameplay as players step into the suit of the Caped Crusader and attempt to take on the Rat King.
The gameplay seems to be a mixture of action and puzzle-solving. As previously revealed, Batman: Arkham Shadow will utilize a combo-driven freeform combat system and even include the ability to glide down from above to pull off sneak attacks — all of which is seen showcased in the gameplay trailer below.
We also get a glimpse of Detective Mode, a series staple, which allows players to perch from above and plan their series of stealth attacks. Players will also have the full suite of Batman's gadgets and tools at their disposal, including Batarangs, smoke bombs, and the Grapnel-gun.
This time around, you are Batman. Set between Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum, step into the shoes of Bruce Wayne as he takes on the Rat King, a dangerous new criminal with a cultish following. Reunite with iconic characters such as Harleen Quinzel, Jim Gordon, Harvey Dent, Dr. Crane, and more. See who (if any) become villains.
Roger Craig Smith will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman following his previous portrayal in Arkham Origins. He is joined by Troy Baker as Harvey Dent, Tara Strong as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Mark Rolston as James Gordon, and Khary Payton as Otis Flannagan.
In addition to the gameplay trailer and cast announcements, it was revealed that Batman: Arkham Shadow will arrive this October. The game is developed by Camouflaj, the studio behind the Iron Man VR game, and Oculus Studios, in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC. It will be released exclusively for Meta Quest 3.
