The first new Batman: Arkham game in eight years has been revealed, and it's another VR game. Teased this week, Batman: Arkham Shadow will put you in the suit of the Dark Knight to save Gotham City.
"Gotham City is in danger," WB Games teased alongside a teaser trailer. "And you’re the only one who can save it."
Warner Bros. Games didn't offer many details but did confirm it to be a story a new story set in the Batman: Arkham franchise. We don't yet know who will be voicing the Caped Crusader in the game.
More details will be shared during the Summer Game Fest this summer. The annual summer gaming event is scheduled for June 7th.
Batman: Arkham Shadow's reveal comes just a few months after the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which was developed by Batman: Arkham series creator Rocksteady. While not technically a "Batman: Arkham" game -- much to the disappointment -- it is technically set within the Arkhamverse.
Unfortunately, even the loose ties to the Batman: Arkham series weren't enough to save Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from being a major flop. Warner Bros. has admitted that the controversial live service game fell short of the publisher's expectations.
Although Batman: Arkham Shadow is actually part of the Batman: Arkham franchise, the reveal this week was met with mixed reactions as it's still technically not a traditional game. Many fans were undoubtedly hoping for a proper return to the universe on consoles and PC, not in VR.
In fact, it's actually been a lot longer than eight years since we played a Batman: Arkham game with a traditional controller. The latest game in the franchise, released in 2016, was Batman: Arkham VR. The game was developed by Rocksteady Studios. The last game in the series released for consoles and PC was 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight which was also from Rocksteady Studios.
Batman: Arkham Shadow is releasing exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 later this year. It's developed by Camouflaj, the studio behind the Iron Man VR game, and Oculus Studios, in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC. Warner Bros. Games has not yet announced Rocksteady's next project, although it's possible they are assisting with this new game as well.
