Development has officially wrapped on Days Gone, which means that the renowned creators of
Resistance: Retribution, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and the
Syphon Filter series can finally focus more on their other projects.
Back in July, we learned that Sony Bend Studio had been working or a brand new, still unannounced project. Considering that PlayStation Vita is all but officially dead, it's rather safe to say that they are most definitely not developing mobile
Resistance or
Uncharted games.
The fact that Sony is also slowly abandoning Vita (those who own the console and monthly PlayStation Plus subscription can’t even download free games for the system no more), and this mysterious project had been in active development long before
Days has gone gold, suggests that this rumored video game might be an all-new IP not related to any other already established brand or a new
Syphon Filter!
While nothing has been confirmed yet, there's a chance that
Syphon Filter will return in the not-too-distant future. In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony Bend Creative Director John Garvin was asked about the series and said "
I really appreciate that question because I was a writer and a director on all the Syphon Filter games. I love Syphon Filter but man we have been so focused on Days Gone but when this thing ships and I can relax...," Garvin explained. "
I'll think about it. Never say never!"
The first
Syphon Filter was released in 1999, so it's quite possible that the young generation of gamers have never heard about this very first Bend Studio project. Over the years, the Oregonian developer also managed to release
Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain for PlayStation 2 and two smaller games for PlayStation Portable. In November 2017, Sony filed two
Syphon Filter trademarks with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, suggesting that the acclaimed stealth series is not totally dead yet.
At the time of writing, Sony had not revealed any plans to make a brand new
Syphon Filter video game.
At its core, Days Gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love—and hope. It's about how, even when confronted with such enormous tragedy, hope never dies. Play as Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival while searching for a reason to live.
Days Gone will be available for PlayStation 4 on April 26, 2019.
