There were plenty of exciting announcements and intriguing reveals during today's State of Play, but PlayStation fans were once again left waiting for Sony to announce a Bloodborne remake. Instead, what we got was a remaster of Days Gone, Bend Studio's 2019 action-adventure game.
Days Gone was originally released for the PlayStation 4 in April 2019 with a PC port released in May 2021. The game is set in post-apocalyptic Oregon two years after the start of a pandemic that turned most of humanity into zombie-like creatures. The story follows Deacon St. John, a former outlaw-turned-drifter, who discovers that his wife, having been assumed dead, may still be alive and sets out to find her.
Days Gone was released to mixed reviews with criticism aimed towards the game's mission design and overall technical issues. Numerous game bugs and an unstable frame rate coupled with frequent loading screens hampered the open-world experience. The overall narrative, including the side missions, were also uninspiring and overall lackluster.
While Days Gone's director Jeff Ross originally claimed that it had sold over eight million units by late 2020, it was later reported that the game had sold just over seven million units. Sony opted not to greenlight a sequel. However, now it's being remade for the PlayStation 5.
According to Bend Studio Creative and Product Lead Kevin McAllister, Days Gone Remastered will feature improved graphical fidelity, increased foliage draw distance, improved shadow and lighting quality, Tempest 3D Audio, VRR support, and more. Players will also be able to choose between Quality mode for increased resolution or Performance mode for improved framerates.
The game will also make use of the PlayStation 5's DualSense controller, including its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
"Ride across the Broken Road and feel the rumble of your bike’s engine or the wheels gripping the dirt roads in the palm of your hands," McAllister teased. "Lose yourself in the unique environment of the Pacific Northwest with weather haptics including rain and thunder. Get to grips with the distinct feel and resistance of various weapons from Deacon’s arsenal while fighting your way through hordes of Freakers."
New accessibility features will open the game to larger audiences with things like High Contrast mode, Game Speed, UI Narration, Collectible Audio Cues, Controller Remapping, Field of View slider, and more.
There are even new ways to experience Days Gone. Horde Assault is a new survival arcade mode that challenges you to achieve a high score while surviving for as long as possible against increasingly large hordes of creatures. In Permadeath mode you can attempt to finish the entire campaign story in a single playthrough without dying.
Days Gone Remastered will be released on PlayStation 5 as a digial-only title on April 25, 2025. It's priced at $49.99, but if you already own the game on PS4, you can upgrade to the Remastered version for just $10.
All of the new content in the Rematered version is also coming to PC as part of the Broken Road DLC. For $10, you'll get Horde Assault, Permadeath mode, Speedrun mode, DualSense haptic feedback support, the new accessibility features, and ehanced photo mode.
As for a Bloodborne remake, maybe next next time.
