For almost 10 years without any news regarding the
Devil May Cry franchise, Capcom revealed—during this year's E3—that
Devil May Cry 5 was already in development; finally giving fans what they had been clamouring for all of these years.
Ever since
Devil May Cry 5 was revealed, Capcom has done a great job keeping fans interested in the project by giving them constant updates, and even releasing a few gameplay videos here and there to quench that
Devil May Cry thirst that built up for 10 years.
The latest update from Capcom doesn't quite focus on the game itself but on "Subhuman", which is Dante's main theme for
Devil May Cry 5, performed by Cody Matthew Johnson and Suicide Silence. The theme itself was actually received a mixed reception from fans, who were quick to dismiss it due to the lyrics, but the controversy actually has to do with the author and not the tune.
Shortly after "Subhuman" was revealed, the song's vocalist Eddie Hermida was involved in a case of sexual allegations; which prompted Capcom to remove the theme from the game, although the song was written and recorded before the allegations surfaced.
Capcom has now given us an update regarding the
Devil May Cry 5's "Subhuman" theme for Dante, and the song will see Michael Barr providing the vocals. The developer also mentions that the work done by Suicide Silence and writers Cody Matthew Johnson & Mark Heylum will not be changed since they were not part of the allegations against Hermida.
This is Capcom's official statement:
Earlier this year, we debuted Dante’s new battle theme from Devil May Cry 5, “Subhuman”, performed by Cody Matthew Johnson feat. Suicide Silence. Shortly after the song’s reveal, we were made aware of unfortunate news and allegations about the track’s main vocalist Eddie Hermida. While the song was written and recorded in-game well before such allegations, we’d still like to ensure, to the best of our abilities, that your experience with the game ultimately goes unmarred. As such, our development team, producers, recording and mixing teams have worked hard to find and implement a new vocal track by Michael Barr.
It is worth noting that the hard work of the Suicide Silence band members, as well as song writers Cody Matthew Johnson & Mark Heylmun, remained intact, as they were not involved with the incidents. As you hear the new track in new promotional materials and in-game, please expect the instrumental parts to sound the same as before. In-game credits have also been updated to properly reflect the new recording.
We hope you continue to look forward to Devil May Cry 5 when it launches on March 8, 2019 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
