The most recent marketing push for
Devil May Cry 5 has been focusing on the third playable protagonists, the mysterious and still pretty enigmatic V. Capcom is touting him as a deceptively strong character that can summon three dangerous demons to assist him in battle:
Shadow (a panther-like beast that can morph into deadly blades and needles),
Griffon (a bird demon that can carry V across large areas and attack with fire beams), and a massive demon that crushes enemies
Nightmare.
Famitsu has recently released a comprehensive summary of V's powers and it looks like that hero's complicated personality is actually even more confusing. First of all, V turns out to be a victim, as his summons have possessed him, giving him the controversial tattoos and black hair, as his natural state is actually white hair and (mostly) tattoo-free skin. For example, when he summons
Nightmare, which uses the Devil Trigger meter, that causes a peek at V’s natural looks.
When it comes to the beasts, Griffon is the only summon that can speak human language and can talk with
Nightmare and
Shadow to communicate what they are saying to V. Each of these demons has different roles in combat, most notably
Nightmare who is not controlled by the player unless they opt to ride on him. Nightmare is slow and doesn't have many moving options and manually controlling him means that you most likely have to fight the demons at the same spot you've decided to control him.
For some reason, neither of them can kill enemies, so it's V's role to deal with the damaged ones moving in to deliver the final blow when enemies turn white. To heal his animal partners faster, V can stand lose to them in their core state, while opening and reading his book allows V to regenerate his Devil Trigger and the closer you are to enemies while reading it, the more extra points you get.
A new demonic invasion has begun with the seeds of a demon tree being sown in Red Grave City. Now fully equipped with his trusty Red Queen and Blue Rose, and a new arsenal of rad robot hands thanks to his partner Nico, Nero must rise up to this new impossible task. With such insane amount of energy and destruction emanating from this surprise invasion, the stage is now set for the latest chapter of the “Sons of Sparda” saga.
Devil May Cry 5 is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC March 8, 2019.
