Earlier this month, we found out a bunch of official news about the PlayStation 5 such as what it will be called and that it will be releasing in the latter half of next year —
check that out here. However, it seems that Sony is already looking even further into the future than the next generation of consoles.
According to a recent report by
Gematsu, Sony Interactive Entertainment recently filed to trademark the term
"PS6" as well as the respective abbreviations for the next four generations of PlayStation consoles after that — those being the PlayStation 7, 8, 9, and 10.
While this is certainly interesting, it doesn't mean that Sony are actively at work on the next five generations of PlayStation consoles at the moment but rather that they simply want to bagsy the terms ahead of time. For instance, Sony Interactive Entertainment trademarked the term
"PS5" all the way back in 2006 but we're only just hearing official information about the console.
This is the reasoning that Sony employed when
discussing the PlayStation Assist feature that they recently filed a trademark for — which seems to suggest that the PlayStation 5 could feature a voice-driven AI assitant akin to Alexa, Siri, and Cortana.
