CYBERPUNK 2077 Sees Massive 79% Drop In Playerbase On Steam

Cyberpunk 2077's playerbase on Steam has dropped by a whopping 79% since launch. The game saw a peek of over 1 million players in December but has since dropped to just over 200,000.

Despite the issues that plagued Cyberpunk 2077's launch, the game sold more than 13 million copies and broke records on Steam for most concurrent users ever in a single-player game. Unfortunately, it seems the allure of Night City is starting to wane as CD Projekt Red's RPG has seen a massive drop in its player base on Steam.

According to GitHyp's data, Cyberpunk 2077 lost 79% of its players since launch. When the game launched in December, it had a peak of over one million players. As of early January, that number has dropped to just slightly over 200,000.

What's perhaps most staggering is the quickness in which the game has dropped off. Comparatively, it took CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt three months before it lost more than 79 percent of its players on Steam. However, The Witcher 3 never saw the peak numbers that Cyberpunk 2077 had. The fantasy RPG peaked with 92,000 players during its launch in May 2015, but retained over half its player base for at least a month.

Unlike the console versions -- which have been a buggy mess -- the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 runs fairly well and has received mostly positive reviews from the Steam community. The rapid drop in players could have more to do with the overall content of the game and not so much about how it runs on PC.

That said, it's possible Cyberpunk 2077 will pick back up in popularity on PC. The game will continue to be supported by the mod community which will help keep things fresh, and CDPR has stated that free DLC for the game will start arriving in early 2021.

I gave up on it a couple of days ago. Got as far as the start of chapter 2, but I couldn't take the daily crashes anymore. Going to wait for the PS5 version to drop.

The most likely reason is because its a short game and everyone already beat it...I finished it over the first weekend after playing about 50 hours. My friends who 100% it beat it a little over a week ago.
