Steven Sharif has provided a detailed update on his federal lawsuit against former Intrepid Studios board members and related entities, reporting that a judge has granted key requests aimed at protecting Ashes of Creation’s intellectual property and technical assets.
In a public message, Sharif stated that the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, under Judge Linda Lopez, approved the appointment of a neutral receiver. The receiver’s role is to marshal, preserve, and safeguard Intrepid’s intellectual property and related assets, monitor any future foreclosure attempts, and report to the court on the propriety of any attempted sale. Sharif described the relief as extraordinary and said the court found it warranted based on the defendants’ prior actions, including what he characterized as violations of the California Commercial Code.
The lawsuit names Robert Dawson, Ryan Ogden, Aaron Bartels, Theresa Fette, Jason Caramanis, and TFE Games Holdings LLC. Sharif has alleged that the defendants engaged in misconduct, including an improper foreclosure that led to the collapse of Intrepid Studios and the dismissal of its workforce. He maintains that a secured debt placed on the company was falsely and unlawfully created to enable that foreclosure. The defendants have submitted extensive documentation supporting their position on the debt; the court has indicated that questions surrounding the secured debt remain unresolved. A special master, receiver, banker, attorney, or magistrate judge is to be appointed to inspect the propriety of the claimed debt. The parties have been directed to try to agree on that person by August 25, or the court will make the appointment itself.
According to Sharif’s update, the defendants reversed their foreclosure after being brought into federal court. Subsequent attempts by board-hired counsel for Intrepid to compel turnover of founder-owned assets, including Discord, Reddit, YouTube, and X accounts, as well as the Ashes of Creation domain, were denied. The court also declined to hand the game codebase and related technical systems directly to the board or Intrepid. Instead, those assets are to be placed with a court-appointed neutral custodian for safekeeping. Sharif stated that the ordered turnover of the relevant technical assets to the custodian was required within 72 hours of the hearing.
Sharif used the update to issue direct warnings. He told potential investors and publishers that assets requested by Intrepid (with limited exceptions such as the domain and certain social accounts) are subject to neutral custody by court order, and that private discussions or presentations from Dawson-affiliated entities should not be treated as clean title or unrestricted authority to sell or license the disputed materials. He also addressed third-party developers, contractors, and technology providers who may have received access to the codebase or credentials, instructing them to preserve all related records and not to expand, copy, or distribute the material outside the court-supervised process.
The message acknowledged the human cost of the situation. Sharif expressed regret for former Intrepid employees and their families, as well as for players who supported the project over many years. He noted that the legal process moves slowly and that future public updates will depend on the court’s schedule and case progress, potentially arriving weeks or months apart. He reiterated his intention to continue the fight to protect the work done on Ashes of Creation and to fulfill the original promise of the game.
The broader dispute has already seen earlier court actions, including the reversal of a prior foreclosure attempt and the dismissal of a separate Nevada lawsuit that Sharif described as part of an effort to control the public narrative. Ownership and control of key Ashes of Creation assets remain contested. The appointment of a neutral receiver and custodian represents a significant procedural step aimed at preserving those assets while the underlying claims proceed.
Sharif closed the update by thanking the community for its continued support and stating that he would not relent. For players and former staff still following the case, the latest ruling provides a measure of court oversight over the game’s technical and intellectual property assets, even as the larger questions of ownership and the project’s future remain before the court.
