It's been only two weeks since the release of Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and while we don't have any sales numbers for the action-adventure game, it sounds like we haven't seen the last of the famed archaeologist -- at least when it comes to video games. We're not quite sure what the future holds for Indy's big-screen glob-trotting adventures, but a new rumor suggests his legacy could continue to live on through video games.
Keep in mind, that nothing official has been confirmed by The Walt Disney Company, which owns the rights to the Indiana Jones IP, but a new rumor from a prominent gaming insider says more Indy games are on the way.
On social media, Daniel Richtman offered the vaguest of clues, simply stating: "Looks like we're getting more Indy games." The tweet was paired with the emoji eyes.
That's all we have to go by, so take this with a grain of salt. Or let the speculation begin.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks, which is owned by Microsoft. The game features an original story set between the events of Raider of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).
Playing as the whip-cracking, wise-talking Indy, players embark on a thrilling adventure full of exploration, action, and puzzles.
"As the brilliant archaeologist – famed for his keen intellect, cunning resourcefulness, and trademark humor – you will travel the world in a race against enemy forces to discover the secrets to one of the greatest mysteries of all time," the description teases. Players will travel the globe -- from the halls of Marshall College to the sunken temples of Sukhothai -- to thwart a sinister group's attempt to uncover the secret to an ancient power connected to the Great Circle.
Reviews for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have been overwhelmingly positive. The game sits at an impressive 86% for Xbox Series X on Metacritic with user reviews at a similar 8.5.
Now we don't know how these reviews translated into sales. Making it even more difficult to measure is the fact that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle released as a day-one launch title for free through Xbox Game Pass. The game is also available on PC and is scheduled to be released on PlayStation 5 in early 2025.
If more Indiana Jones games are on the way, there's no saying if it would be a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, or if MachineGames or Bethesda would even be involved. It's possible that DIsney and Lucasfilm are simply looking to keep the franchise relevant through video games since it seems to be struggling at the box office.
As Harrison Ford is no longer able to play the iconic character, Disney is faced with the difficult decision to recast the character -- something which proved difficult with Han Solo -- or keep the legacy of the character alive through video games.
